The Galician Center for Contemporary Art is a space for cultural expansion, whose function is to expand the artistic cultural panorama and reflect on the diversity of culture in contemporary society. Created in 1993, this center is situated within the politics of post-1980s Spain to promote the development of cultural platforms, and to favor Galicia´s introduction into the international artistic circuit.
Since its beginnings, the CGAC has marked trends in the art of the last few decades through retrospective exhibits of internationally-known artists next to exhibits dedicated to promoting Galician art, including well-known authors as well as emerging artists. It has also continually collaborated with other institutions, collaborations which will be reinforced with long-term projects during this new era in the CGAC.
But, in addition to being an exhibition space, the CGAC is also a dynamic and multidisciplinary center in which conferences, artist´s workshops, musical incursions, and scenic and film arts can be celebrated, allowing for the active participation of the public and favoring the exchange of ideas among professionals of many fields. Society and its difficulties are incorporated into the art world; the galleries of the center are open to the possibilities of technology and social debates which also influence the CGAC´s collection itself, constructing a story which is read through current events, and which facilitates both the individualization of the works and the interrelation among all of them at the same time.
